Warmth in the Winter

My son-in-law is restoring a Victorian Queen Anne house inn which I plan to open a B&B with a small gift shop on the ground floor. In keeping with the age of the house and the antique furnishings, I am using period patterns to make knitted and crocheted coverlets and bedspreads for the guest rooms and for sale in the shop. The floral patterns and intricate yarn over lace work pieces are lovely to look at. The patterns are not always easy to follow. Like period recipes the directions are sometimes idiosyncratic. I have yet to find the Mrs. Beaton of needlework to give a standard set of abbreviations and directions to these antique instructions.

I envision a group of women sitting in a parlor or a country kitchen showing each other how to turn string into a blanket or coverlet to keep their children warm and beautify their homes. I imagine they show their young daughters how to make a doily that will one day be a piece of lace in a larger tablecloth or coverlet. What better way to prepare your child to make the scarves and sweaters her own children will need than to have her make the table runners and place mats with scraps of left over yarn? What a practical outlet for the creative spirit inside these craftswomen.

I envy them. I am trying to develop patterns of my own, and I am finding the design of a pattern that fits the measurements I need is not as easy as deciphering the patterns of that long ago era.
So far I am a poor follower rather than an innovator, but I am getting closer to my own patterns with every row I copy from them. Even if I never devise a pattern of my own that meets their standard I shall have had the pleasure of their company through their work and their directions. It is a privilege to share a bit of their world while working towards my own goal of covering the tables and beds of my B&B.

Sanquhar Classic Knits

While doing research on two and three color knitting I discovered Sanquhar knitting. It is from the southern part of Scotland and looks very elvish. It is not quite Norwegian and not quite Fair Isle, but it is beautiful. The patterns are based on squares. Each square is outlined in a darker color and inside the individual squares are a set of geometric shapes in the dark color on a light background. The shapes compliment each other and there is usually a ten row repeat of the patterns. The odd number squares exchange patterns with the even numbered squares back and forth for the length of the piece. These patterns are not for the faint of heart or easily frustrated. Once you master the repeats you can let up your guard some, but it requires close attention for the patterns to be true. I strongly recommend you start them when it is quiet and you are at the top of your game mentally. Sanquhar knitting is a great warm-up for the NYT Sunday puzzle or a hidden object game. You definitely need a row counter and rings to separate the pattern repeats. It is as good as any meditation technique. When I am learning a pattern the whole world fades away and only the colors on the grid come into focus. After thirty minutes I have to take a break or the pattern becomes too hard to follow.

I have a set of socks on the needles now and I shall post them on etsy as soon as they are finished. Sanquhar knits are also great for gloves and scarves. Be careful how tightly you carry the colors. If you pull them too tight the stretch will be gone from the knit. If you don't keep an even tension you will find the individual stitches are not even and that gives you an uneven pattern.

So far the best wool for me has been Peruvian fingering weight wool, but I think it would be a good idea for a less experienced knitter to start on large needles with worsted weight yarn and make a Sanquhar lap robe or scarf. A triangle shawl might also be a good way to start.

Hello all! It has been a few weeks since my last confession... uh feature. Now that the holidays are over and 2012 has officially started, I am looking for some time to relax and refresh... So it's time to do a little shopping!

Vintage Portuguese Copper Tea Pot

I really like this vintage copper tea pot discovered by Connie Haskell of Redemption Art. It was originally made in Portugal and features a ceramic handle. I can only imagine sitting next to the window on a cold snowy morning this winter and pouring a hot cup of tea out of this pot. Connie has lots of other vintage items she "found" in Hawaii including perfume bottles, garden decor, brass lights, and many more items. I envy her as she gets to go out shopping for these objects! Key Heart Coin Necklace

And with Valentine's day coming up, how about this pretty charm necklace featuring pearls and silver charms? I particularly love the key and heart charms on either side of the necklace. And last but not least, check out this shell bracelet made by Ellen Mackler of Gmaellen's store. This bracelet jumped out at me right away. It makes me think so much about the beach (and what I would not give to be on one right now!). The colors make me think of a sunset, while the draping shells on the crochet pattern remind me of a fishing net. So gorgeous! Chicken Enchiladas

So my husband is a picky eater... he doesn't eat greens, onions, ice cream with candy in it, and spicy food, among other numerous restrictions... But one dish that he absolutely loves is Chicken Enchiladas. Now I learned this recipe for enchiladas from fellow Poison Gardener, Melissa, who Americanized the recipe for people like my husband. It is pretty easy to make, it just takes about 2 hours to complete. I also love this recipe because it makes a lot of servings (it always re-heats nicely - we eat it for days). I know it isn't a great picture but here is what it looks like:

Ingredients:
6 Boneless Chicken Breasts
2 Large Cans of Enchilada Sauce (we use mild)
2 Bags of Burritos Shells (16)
2 Large Bags of Shredded Mexican Cheese
Butter
Cajun Seasoning

Directions:

1) Melt butter (or a substitute) in a large skillet. Meanwhile, remove fat from the chicken breasts and season them with the cajun seasoning on the front and back. Once the butter is melted, brown the chicken breasts in the skillet.

2) Once the chicken breasts are browned, add 3/4 can of Enchilada sauce to the pan. Let the chicken breasts simmer in the enchilada sauce (flip them every once in a while if the enchilada sauce does not cover them) until the chicken breasts begins to pull apart (or until the inside of the chicken is done).

3) Shred the chicken breasts using a fork and knife. It is best to shred the chicken into long thin pieces.

4) Preheat oven to 375.

5) In a large lasagna pan, pour a little enchilada sauce into the bottom and spread evenly. Now, heat up a pack of tortilla shells in the microwave (1 minute for each pack). Spoon shredded chicken into a shell, sprinkle shredded cheese on the chicken and then wrap the tortilla shell tightly. Place in pan. Repeat until you fill the bottom layer of the pan.

6) Pour enchilada sauce on top of the row of enchiladas and spread. Make sure to cover all of the enchilada shells in at least a light layer of sauce. Sprinkle shredded cheese on top of the enchilada sauce.

7). Now, continue filling enchilada shells and make a second layer. Top this layer with enchilada sauce and remaining cheese (and remaining meat if you have any left). You may need to use a second pan - if you do, remember to put enchilada sauce in the bottom of the pan.

8) Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the sauce is boiling a little.

Now I sit Me Down to Knit

It is 7 a.m. and I am waiting for my son-in-law and my three grandchildren (2.5 year old twins and a very energetic 4 year old big brother) to make their appearance. Living on a farm we get up early and start work right away. This morning I was at it at 5. By 6 when I said good-bye to my daughter on her way to work in the city, I had unloaded and reloaded the dishwasher; folded last night's laundry; put in the first wash load of the day; and made a jello salad for dessert this evening. I sweep and mop the kitchen floor while the water for my coffee heats on the stove.

While my coffee cools to a reasonable temperature I gather my needles, yarn and pattern book. I have about 30 to 45 minutes to myself. I can work out a complicated cable pattern or study the color chart for Russian mittens without the distraction of active toddlers and a pre-schooler. I meditate on the day to come and set the agenda for the time the four of us will be together. Of course the agenda gets scrapped when a new and exciting event occurs (like the spider that lives in the window frame making an unexpected cameo appearance on the kitchen window ledge or the unexpected visit by a lost mustang along the fence line at the edge of the cow pasture). I cast on the number of stitches needed to make the sock I am working on and focus intently on the pattern I have decided to master. The challenge of the new work is calming even when it is a little frustrating. I usually get an inch or an inch and a half done before the smiling faces of the twins bid me good morning. It is sacred time.

The wins come tumbling down the stairs with my son-in-law. I put aside the knitting. My focus turns to the small wonders so happy to be alive. My son-in-law starts his chores, either at my house or his, after a quick cup of coffee. I can always sit and knit when they go to bed in the evening I tell myself, knowing that is if I don't fall asleep almost as soon as they do.

Happy New Year from Poison Garden! I cannot believe it is 2012 already and that we will soon be starting our second year in business. We thank everyone out there who follows our blog and store, and look forward to meeting all the newcomers this year.

But enough with the business talk... today is a day of introspection and looking to the future. Has anyone decided on their New Years resolutions? Here is my list so far:
1. Like many other people, my main resolution this year is to lose weight (10 pounds or so) and get toned.
2. Finish my dissertation (or at least be in the editing stage)
3. Improve my sewing skills - I would like to make myself one wearable article of clothing by the end of the year.

How about you? Any ideas on what you will work on this year? And again Happy New Year!

Copper and Goldstone Bracelet

This bracelet by KC Dragonfly would also be a perfect item for a Bohemian outfit. It is made with goldstone (which I had never heard of!), copper and hematite beads. I love that it is such a simple bracelet, yet is so interesting at the same time... especially the crescent moon shaped beads in the center. To be honest, there are a lot of items from KC Dragonfly that I would love to own including Christmas stockings, parasols and long earrings. Take care when selecting yarn for winter socks. In addition to weight and color there are important decisions. Winter socks require extra warmth and good wear. If the socks are to be worn as boot liners make sure you use merino wool or cotton with a little acrylic. I advise merino wool to keep the moisture inside the socks. The cotton socks work in Wellington boots because the rubber of the boots keeps the moisture inside the boot and the cotton wicks it away from the wearer's foot. My grandchildren wear their socks inside their rubber boots and never complain of cold toes. I like the feel of merino wool with a little cashmere when I snuggle under the blankets and watch television. 100% acrylic socks keep your feet warm but they can also give you a problem with excess moisture (they don't wick the moisture away from your feet or absorb it into the fibers). The colors are spectacular but the downside is greater than with a natural fiber yarn or a combination natural fiber/acrylic blend. I will post pictures of the finished cotton and some wool socks on my etsy shop sometime next week. So far nothing beats the wool/silk/cashmere yarns for lounging socks. Some very delicate silk socks make Sunday morning in bed with the crossword paper very luxurious. I make those for friends around Valentine's Day. Very romantic.

Well, we are winding down the days until Christmas. I for one have not even started shopping! I am bad about procrastinating. I also love this card made by Annie Olivero from Empty On The Inside. Annie aptly describes this card when she says, "Back in the Stone Age, when children trudged through snowstorms for miles just to get to school, and when getting a single orange in one's stocking was reason enough to celebrate the holiday - and well before someone came up with those tiny little Christmas tree lights, we had to make do with ungainly bulbs that came only in red, blue, yellow, orange and green". I have recentlyarrived in the desert mountains of New Mexico after a pleasant, albeit long,journey by rail car. The red mountains speckled with green shrubbery rising uparound my new home away from home in the southwest mining town of Madrid findme at the dining table. This new seclusion from the hustle and bustleencouraging me to put thought to print. This is the type of place wherecreative outlets beg to be explored.

One thing you find yourself doing out here, is taking a lotof photographs. Don't block your socks

There are some really fancy devices in the stores and on line to block socks. I have seen plastic ones, padded ones and metal ones in the yarn shop. There are also instructions for making sock blockers from old wire hangers. Some of these contraptions cost more than the yarn to make cashmere socks. I avoid them at all costs.

I don't block socks. The feet for which they are made block them to a perfect fit the first time they are put on. Soaking and stretching and ironing them may make them look nice in the box, but it is the wearer who blocks them to his/her foot.

I just sent four pairs of grey flannel exercise socks to a customer in Illinois. She is giving them to friends as Christmas presents. Because they are cotton and acrylic they can be machine washed and dried, but they will keep the shape their owners give them.

Save yourself money and time, let the feet do the shaping. You just do the knitting.

So on Wednesday I visited my best friend the Toad Hunter and her sister. I kept commenting on her sister's candles which smelled like apples or pumpkins...or something spicy. So we have our jewelry... now we need wine! Or at the very least wine accessories. The Cat Hoodie

It snowed on the farm yesterday. It stayed cold enough today for my grandchildren to ask for mittens when they played outside--and keep them on. It's still cold enough for snow here, so I took a day off from making socks for Christmas orders to make a cat hoodie for Melissa, my friend from the Poison Garden. Her cat is of a certain age, but he still thinks of himself as a young swain and is not content to look out the window at the snow and bluster of a central Indiana winter. He dashes out no matter how careful his people are. He does not venture far, but he comes back wet and shivering. It takes some time for him to get his joints working properly again. I put aside my logical side, reasoning that his thick fur kept him warm and dry and made him a sweater with a I made sure there was enough nylon in the yarn to keep the rain and snow from reaching his fur. He can gad about in style, a mass of lime green, turquoise and lemon yellow stripes. I will try to get Melissa to take his picture and post it for you all to see.

Rainy Day Projects

It is raining today, so the plan to put out bulbs with my grandchildren is shelved. Instead we are working on inside projects. I am working on orders for Christmas socks and gloves. They are busy making play dough sculptures to show their parents when they get home from work. I used some time early this morning to start setting up my etsy shop for the Christmas giving season.

When the twins nap after lunch I shall use the time to design new patterns of my own and learn new techniques. This rainy day I am trying out new three and four color patterns for mittens. The technique comes from tribal people in Russia and presents a challenge to my skill and creativity.

So you may have noticed that the Poison Garden store and blog has seemed quiet these past few months... Well we have been quite busy getting ready for and attending festivals. We have a bunch of new items sitting in our workshop...waiting to be photographed... including herbal eye pillows, flower hair pins, and Victorian bags! We also have some wonderful new rear-view mirror hangers (with angels, spiders and other cool charms), crystal pendulums and decorative bottles. It may be a little while before we post these items, but we are excited to finally show-off our new goods. I know I know... stop procrastinating and post these items!

Darlington Old Fashioned Day

In the meantime, I wanted to share some photos and tell you a little about our most recent shows. The first show, called Old Fashioned Days, took place in Darlington, IN on September 9th and 10th. Darlington is a small town in Central Indiana not too far from Lafayette, IN. Darlington is also the town in which Nona (Sandra) is opening her Victorian Bed and Breakfast (which is haunted, by the way). You can read some of Nona's tips for knitting around our blog as well! Anyways, the festival went very well. We got to eat some awesome food including barbecue, lemon shake-ups and cake (although Melissa's dog stole her sister Destiny's piece when she took it home!). The town held some fun events such as a parade (complete with tractors, old fashioned carriages and even a gun display), a hulu hoop contest and big wheel races. We shared our booth space with a number of other great artists such as Nona's Knits, her friend Pat, her son-in-law Zach, and Jerry Mack the master candle-maker. You may also notice that Melissa, her sister Destiny and I broke out our own Old-Fashioned costumes!

Poison Garden then traveled to Chicago for Pagan Pride Day on September 17, 2011. The festival was held in beautiful Pleasant Home Park. In the park, there was a large historic Federal-style home which was beautiful. It was open during the festival so we did get to see parts of it. The park was also surrounded by a gorgeous wrought-iron fence... perfect setting for the Butterfly Queen, the Pumpkin Tender, and the Toad Catcher if I do so say myself. All three of us showed up in our finest outfits for such an event!

The festival itself served as a gathering place for Pagans to meet one another, shop related vendors and participate in various workshops and rituals. The festival also hosted a number of entertainers such as singers, a bellydancer, a play and drummers. And the vendors were all selling some very interesting items including feathers and belly dancing clothes, voodoo supplies, artwork, photography, incense, jewelry and even embroidered gifts. All in all it was fun day in Chicago - with beautiful weather! Thank you Chicago.. we will definitely be returning.

BEST Featured Artists: Start of the Holiday season

Happy Friday! Well Halloween is over, the nights are getting longer and soon it will be time for the Holiday season. While I wait a while before I start making my holiday purchases, I always like to spend a few months planning and thinking about what I might buy (or what I may put on my own wish list). And this year I would like to buy as many handmade items as I can for gifts! Go handmade! Anyways, today I would like to feature a few stores that offer wonderful gift and holiday items.

Pearls and Pendant Necklace

I love the jewelry over at Blue and White Wear. Much of her jewelry has an oriental flair, but she also makes jewelry with a variety of natural gemstones as well. In addition to jewelry, you can also find wine glass charms. The necklace featured on the left is one of my favorite, but I am a sucker for freshwater pearls. I love how on one side, the pearls are rounded and as you move to the other side, the pearls are more of a coin shape. Very unique! Also, I think she does a wonderful job with the wire-wrapping on the pendant. This would make a lovely gift for any special woman in your life or buy for yourself for upcoming parties and occasions!

Christmas Stocking

KC Dragonfly is one of my favorite Etsy stores which offers parasols, stockings, ear cuffs, pouches and bags, cellphone charms, jewelry and decorative bottles. For anyone who has a more alternative style, this store is excellent! I had to feature one of her goth Christmas stockings called "Nightmare Before Christmas" made from black and white damask fabric with red and black trimmings. The stocking even has a little heel...it would look so cute hanging in my living room at Christmas!

And finally, what would the Holiday season be without handmade cards? Even if you do not have time to make your own cards, you can still purchase a handmade cards. Empty on the Inside (cute name too!) is run by Annie of Oklahoma. One of the things I love about this shop is that the cards are hand-painted! Now you can purchase cards and art all at the same time. The cards are also blank inside so you can write whatever message you would like, although the cards are signed by Annie. And to go along with the Christmas stocking, here is one of their Winter cards featuring a pine tree with a shiny red berry.

Turkish Yarn

There is a mastery of color and construction to Turkish yarn that reflects the centuries they have been spinning and dyeing the stuff of which carpets are made. There is a Turkish blue that sings of the ocean and the deep Mediterranean sky. The Turkish yarn makers combine it with a dark chocolate brown and hot sand white that causes me to catch my breath as I knit a pair of gloves or a scarf wit it. The yarns themselves slip through my fingers and glide off the needles with no effort at all. I can see why their wares, and their rugs, have been coveted since ancient times.

They can spin a super light thread that does not tangle or break as you make lace or fine socks. There is a wide range of intense colors with which to make a chunky sweater like no one else will be wearing that does not separate as you knit and purl. The socks I have made with their wool do not seem to wear out or fade with washing. They keep their shape and just grow softer with wear.

It is worth searching for. Don't look at the cost. Sometimes it comes very dear, but at other times it has been consigned to a bargain bin or a discount store. The Turks keep the quality high in any case. When Nona's Knits opens in Darlington, there will be bins of quality Turkish yarn for your knitting pleasure and for mine.

Lifelines

Few things can frustrate a knitter more than finding a mistake on row 16 at end of row 23 of a complicated pattern. Whenever I knit a piece of complicated lace I throw myself a lifeline at the end of every pattern repeat, or halfway through a pattern that has more than 20 rows in the repeat.

A lifeline is a piece of thread or contrasting yarn, that is threaded through the stitches of a row. The lifeline is of a contrasting color and I leave long tails to make it easy to spot and remove when the piece is finished. The lifeline has to be on a row without yarn overs. If you are making a flat piece the row will be a purl row. If you are knitting in the round, the lifeline goes through the row immediately following a row with yarn overs. Whenever I knit a piece of complicated lace I throw myself a lifeline at the end of every pattern repeat, or halfway through a pattern that has more than 20 rows in the repeat.

I count the stitches at the end of every third row. If I have more stitches or fewer stitches than I should, or if I see an error in the pattern, I back track to the row with the lifeline. I don't have to worry about losing stitches in the row with the lifeline. They are on a piece of thread. I can easily resume the pattern because the lifeline is always on the same row of the pattern.

Leave the stitches on the needle. Use a tapestry needle and gently slide the lifeline through all the stitches in the row. Make a note of the number row it is in the pattern. Repeat at regular intervals until your piece is finished.

I think you will find, as I do, that the amount of time it takes to do this is well spent. In addition to saving time and work by limiting the number of rows that have to be undone, I like to take the time to review the pattern and assess my work as i thread the lifeline through.

My grandson turns 4 today. His father is putting the finishing touches on his train bed. He gets to order anything he wants at the restaurant of his choice. There are surprises already wrapped in paper. His mother is taking two days off from work. His grandfather is flying in from Washington, DC. Packages have arrived from California and there is a surprise waiting for him in Bloomington at his Uncle Greg's house. I bought him a Radio Flyer Big Wheel complete with lights and sounds. Altogether a fine beginning to his 5th year.

But what he asked for from me was a pair of ginger colored socks, shocking in their intense orange color. He plans to wear them with his Halloween costume Monday. I asked him to try on the first sock as I finished it so I could make sure the fit was right. He put it on and has not taken it off. He is wearing that sock now as he sleeps. I told him I needed the sock so I could make sure his socks matched exactly. In 4 year old fashion he refused to surrender the sock. "I need it, Glima," he said. "It's mine."

I will get the sock when he gets dressed to ride his big wheel or when he puts on his clothes to help me walk the dog. I will take the time to finish his second sock, even though there are customers waiting for socks of their own. They will understand. What will live in my heart is the undiluted joy in the his eyes when he slipped on the simple tube of cotton over his skinny little boy legs. Those socks tell him I love him. And his joy in them tells me he loves me, too.

Happy Birthday, Jordan Thomas. Wear your ginger socks in good health.

Countdown to Halloween: Movie Magic

Pumpkins, ghosts, ghouls and goblins...I love Halloween and cannot get enough of it! One of my favorite things to do heading up to Halloween is to watch my list of favorite movies. Surprisingly, though, I do not include many horror movies in my list... I am a child trapped in an adult body :)

I had a hard time deciding if Nightmare Before Christmas or the Addams Family movies should be at the top of the list, but whenever I think "Halloween" the first movie that pops in my head is Tim Burton's film. There were a couple of movies that were runner-ups for my top ten including the Frighteners and Sleepy Hollow. Ok enough rambling, here is my list:

In addition to watchfulness and confidence, the peacock often symbolizes beauty, immortality, death and resurrection. How do I make sure the socks and gloves I knit are the same length?

There are several ways to make sure the socks and gloves match. You can use a long circular needle and make both at the same time. This is an advanced technique that takes time to master. Wait until after Christmas to try it or those cozy Christmas slippers may become an Easter bunny surprise.

Make one sock or glove. Hold the second sock against it as a quick measure. Unless you are making chunky yarn slippers there is a real risk one of the pair will be an eighth or even a quarter inch shorter than the other.

The same thing can happen when you measure each half of the pair with a ruler or tape measure. Even if you block them to the same measurement, the truth will out when they are washed.

To make sure socks and gloves are the same length when you are knitting one at a time, clip small lengths of contrasting yarn (I use 4" to 6" pieces) and set them aside. Knit a specific number of rows on the first sock or glove of the pair, 10 or 20 works for me. Slip the last stitch of the completed row you are going to mark to a cable needle and hold it in front. Wrap a small piece of contrasting yarn around the base of the stitch. Make sure the tails of the scrap yarn are to the front of the stitch. Return the wrapped stitch to its original position. Repeat this every 10 or 20 rows and complete the first half of the pair. Do the same with the second sock or glove to make sure they are exactly the same length. When the pair is completed, gently remove the scraps of yarn from the marked rows. You have a perfect pair of gloves or socks for that special person at Christmas.

There is no aspect of the knitting process I do not enjoy. I can spend hours in a yarn shop exploring the bins of yarn. I slip the thread through my fingers to assess its texture and weight Questions come to mind as I examine the evenness of the thread itself.
What is the best way to show the glory of this yarn? I ask myself.
Is it the right fiber for my grandson's new socks? Will my friend Mary wear a hat made of this pumpkin blend? Can my cousin with a wool sensitivity tolerate a small amount of merino wool in the blanket she asked me to make for her? Do my son's friends really wear the skull logo gloves they bought last year?
Some yarn just insists on coming home with me, project undetermined. I have a special basket in my work room for this yarn. I call it the surprise bin. When I am at loose ends I poke through the bin and find a skein or two of yarn and sit with it on my lap. After a time the project this yarn was made for presents itself. Surprise! That turquoise and brown cashmere and silk blend is perfect for the Victorian neck warmer I have wanted to make for months. The colors were interesting on their own, but twisted together they bring out the undertones in each other, showing the variations hand dying alone provides.
Casting on the stitches is the most time consuming part of the process for me. The first row is the most important. It is either the top or the bottom of the garment and the most visible when the project is finished. I take my time and sometimes repeat he process two or three times to make sure the tension is just right.
Watching the pattern develop as I knit and purl and move stitches with cable needles fascinates me. Following a new pattern requires a leap of faith. I have to believe the person who wrote the instructions did not miss a step. I have to stop and remind myself which direction I am going on the graph. Completing the first repeat always makes me smile.
Tension disappears as I focus on the thread turning into a piece of fabric art, either to wear or grace the table or bed. Time shifts from the present to a higher plane. It passes without my noticing or worrying that something else has to get done.
Casting off the stitches after knitting the last row is the beginning of the end of the project. I have been told that I smile and sigh as I cut the thread and tie off the last stitch. Weaving in the seams seems like the end, but the steaming and blocking are yet to be done.

Today I am in the mood for fall! Which, as the pumpkin tender, makes me want to settle in with my robe, a hot cup of coffee and a delicious breakfast that is heavily spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, and cloves. By the way, I highly recommend adding cinnamon to your morning coffee.. so delicious! But to continue with my mood this morning I am featuring "spiced" items from three artistic stores: Off the Wall Expression, the Orange Windmill and Sohlful.

Chalkboard Spice Labels

I love the home decor items over at Off the Wall Expressions, which is a store we have featured before. Tina Ray and her husband (fellow Hoosiers at that!) make vinyl lettering, wall art and chalkboards you can use to decorate your walls. The vinyls take the form of words, pictures, and phrases, including monograms for weddings. Or, you can also purchase a variety of chalkboards for walls or kitchen containers. I love the spice labels pictured to the right. Now you can re-use your old containers over and over again... and if you want to buy a new spice, you do not have to find a new container for it! Very practical... and bring on the autumn spices!

Hand-Bound Leather Journal

I also love paper products and journals, so take a look at the Orange Windmill and the beautiful journals Shirley Lynne offers. Each journal is hand-bound and wrapped in leather (cowhide) in a variety of earthy colors and sizes. Shirley even offer mini journals that are about the size of your palm. You can also easily organize your art, poetry and thoughts as the journal pages are grouped into sections. I imagine sitting at my desk or next to the window writing (with my cup of coffee of course) in a journal like the dark brown leather journal to the left... You can tell from the quality and time put into these products that Shirley is passionate about journaling.

And finally, take a look at this spicy and beautiful giclee Lily created by Anna Cole of Sohlful, a photography and art store in Minnesota. As you can see from the picture, this piece of art blends photography and digital art techniques. I love when photographers enhance their photographs with digital coloring and effects... it gives the photographs an otherwordly feel to them. And this Lily really caught my eye! The colors are beautiful. But Sohlful also offers other photographs that are more traditional photographs of natural settings, leaves and flowers. But one of the most interesting aspects of this store is the paper (Hahnemuhle paper) on which Anna prints her artwork. Hahnemuhle paper is a natural heavy-weight paper made from cotton, not synthetic photo paper. Not only is this paper natural, but its natural whiteness allows Anna to print brilliantly colored art! No wonder her prints are so beautiful.

And each of her Goddess salts is associated with the chakras as well.

Good evening everyone! Tonight we would like to introduce the bold and spunky accessory artist: Ms Kelly Formaldehyde. This Etsy artist, based out of San Diego, CA, designs colorful and exotic hair barrettes, bobby pins, feather fascinators, earrings, necklaces and even birdcage wedding veils. While she has an alternative edge with her bright pink hair, Ms. Formaldehyde is not a traditional Goth, etc. Instead, Ms. Formaldehyde sports her own unique style which is inspired by traditional Polynesian, Hawaiin, tiki, and Day of the Dead styles.

I love the bright colors that she uses in her accessories! Most of the time when we think about Hawaii we do think of bright airy colors, but the particular shades that Ms. Formaldehyde uses even turns the Hawaiian symbols into creepy accessories! In some ways, her accessories remind me of Voodoo and New Orleans as well.

However, my favorite part of her store is the banner which depicts a lady mad scientist (complete with flower and skull in her hair) mixing toxic chemicals and smiling. And in the background? Tiki dolls and tropical flowers! What a perfect banner for this truly unique store.

Good evening! I am excited to introduce this week's featured artist: Sandy Vern. Sandy is a proud New Englander who was born in Massachusetts and now lives in Connecticut. Her time is spent between two businesses: a pet sitting business and her craft store Sandy's Soaps & Things. When it comes to Sandy's soap products, she makes some of her products using a cold process method and the other soaps with a melt and pour process. While these methods are pretty common in the soap-making world, this store is not your everyday bath store... it is indeed a little quirky. As you can see from the owl soap to the left, her soaps are imaginative and different from the other handmade soaps out there.

For example, Sandy has a Harry Potter themed collection of items (a theme of which I heartedly approve). You can treat your skin with several types of Hogwarts soaps, such as those depicting the owlery. Or you can support your favorite Hogwarts house by purchasing the shea butter house soaps. Enjoy the floral/fruity red soap of Gryffindor House, a fresh ocean-scented soap from Ravenclaw, a birthday cake scented Hufflepuff soap or go for the darker side with the Slytherin House soap (complete with a fresh mown hay scent).

If you are looking for more traditional bath items, Sandy also offers a variety of other products including bath bombs, sugar scrubs, and refined soaps in classical scents such as lavender, oats & honey, and vanilla. I am particularly interested in testing her "Gardener's Soap" which is made with cornmeal and pumice to thoroughly clean your hands after working in the yard. Good evening! Today we are taking a trip on the exotic side with jewelry artist Blue & White Wear. Although the artist was born in America, Blue & White Wear is becoming quite the traveler as she has lived in Bangkok, Thailand and now Chile. Most of her earrings, necklaces and bracelets are inspired by her time in Thailand, however. Many of her products therefore feature fans, elephants, mandalas and Buddhas with traditional materials such as jade.

And, of course, many of her items feature the blue and white Chinese, porcelain beads that inspired the store name, Blue & White Wear. The blue and white beads reflect the style of glazing used in traditional Chinese pottery. Some believe the Chinese began making the blue and white vases, bowls and other ceramics as early as the Tang dynasty.

Meet Elizabeth Duquette, the owner of Elizabeth MD Designs which is based out of Sarnia Ontario, Canada. A read over her profile lets you know that this artist is very diverse and even a little alternative! Her work is inspired by not only Victorian, shabby chic, and vintage styles but also other subcultures like Gothic, rockabilly, and psychobilly.

While her tastes are very eclectic, her jewelry design is united by a common feature: it is very elegant. So even though Elizabeth is inspired by bold and loud subcultures, the way she expresses herself in her jewelry is subtle and feminine. This may in large part be due to the fact she uses quality materials like precious and semi-precious gemstones, sterling silver and gold. For example, these blue swarvoski and chain earrings remind me of chain-mail, which is very masculine. However the mixture of the long chains and the pretty blue crystals turns these earrings into a beautiful and modern-looking accessory. Anyone wearing these earrings will therefore make quite a statement without being too eccentric.

OOAK Blood Red Heart Choker

Afternoon everyone! Today we are featuring another great mother-daughter artist team. Meet Debbi (mother) and Amanda (daughter) of Our Home to Yours, a jewelry, accessories and art store based out of Stony Point, North Carolina. One glance at their store tells you three important things about these artists: First, they are very patriotic. When you buy a product from their store, your item is made with all-American materials, supporting the "buy local" movement. Second, these women love children. Debbi calls herself a "professional" mother, who is raising biological children, foster children, and a newly adopted child. Amanda is also mother of a small toddler. Finally, these women are fun! You can find fuzzy hot pink sandals, smiling sun anklets, and even a vintage hat in their store, among other items.

But the best way to get a feel for these artists is to hear from them in their own words:

Hmmmm, first off I'm (Debbi) talkative, Mandy is not, so 3 words will be hard for me.

I know that the first one is more than 3 words, but most everyone calls themselves Christians. We don't have a religion... We have a relationship with our Heavenly Father, and our Savior Jesus Christ, and His Spirit lives in us. So one word won't cut it!. We are artsy-fartsy because we love to ignore the world (housework) and just play in the studio. And we are both mommies...and love it. I have had tons of kids (of all kinds) and Mandy also started her own family and does foster care, and would rather stay home then work. Unfortunately right now, she has to work, but hopefully not for too long.

Our Father and His creation....and Nana (Debbi's mom) was a great artist herself.

What is something unique about your products that you wish all of your customers knew?

Well, you never know what you mind find in our shop because we are a bit ADD. We will try most any craft, depending on our moods. Right now I've been bitten by the bead bug, ergo, jewelry. But I've been itching to get out my canvas and paints, and Mandy is into yarn.....so who knows. What I can tell you is that we rarely, if ever, repeat (relist) our items. So you can feel pretty sure that you are getting an OOAK (one of a kind).

I love the clothing and music of the Victorian era, but not the sickness, poverty, oppression and stuff. I don't know about Mandy, this is not something we ever really talked about. Sweetheart Wire-Wrapped Pendant

Meet Cindy and Marilyn of CKSilver, a mother-daughter team based out of Whelan, WA. Their specialty? Creating sterling silver jewelry. In particular, they design bracelets, earrings, and necklaces that are both elegant and yet use natural materials such as pearls, crystals and semi-precious gemstones. While the two women create slightly different designs, their jewelry as a whole reflects their respect for God and the creations they see around them.

My favorite CKSilver piece is the sweetheart pendant pictured above! The swirls of blue and green remind me of the ocean or a picture of a galaxy, which gives this pendant a mystical sort of vibe. It is also sparkly (always a weakness of mine) since it is topped with swarvoski crystals Imagine wearing this pendant on a dainty silver chain!

Southwest Autumn Bracelet

And here is another very interesting piece in their store: the Southwest Autumn bracelet. I like this bracelet for two reasons. First, I love the mix of irregularly shaped turquoise beads with the smooth silver, jasper and garnet beads. These mix of shapes create a bracelet that is chunky and yet still elegant. Second, they chose a great mix of colors. The red and brown gemstones are a surprising complement to the bright turquoise gems. And the color combination also makes this a great item for summer!

And how about this cute earring set made from blue sodalite? They are simple and classy, yet at the same time they are fun and have a cute "twist". And I love the description they provide of this item, which says that, "These earrings are so fun and whimsical, and remind me of perfect little garden chairs sitting in a beautiful manicured English garden." How much more perfect could these earrings get? Plus, I seem to have an attraction to their blue pieces of jewelry!

Smoke Fairies, Through Low Light and Trees

Katherine Blamire and Jessica Davies are the two talented ladies of Smoke Fairies. Their sound is a little hard to describe but the first thing you notice is the moody, brooding blues riffs. You'd bet money these girls are from the South, but guess again: this eerie folk music comes from Sussex, England. If you listen for it, traditional British folk influences can be found weaving through the ethereal landscape of haunting contralto and messosoprano harmonies. Personally, folk + spooky + original lyrics usually equal love for me and these artists have nailed that formula, while adding some new spices to the recipe and getting even slightly psychedelic at times. What really stands out to me about this group is their ability to harmonize together so closely. It gives a soaring, otherworldly power to this otherwise firmly rooted, stuff of the earth band.

Through low light and trees, Smoke Fairies first album, won me over in one listen. With songs like Devil in my Mind, a mystical, rambling song that is slightly reminiscent of 70's psychedelic rock with 80's goth vocals a la Dead Can Dance. Strange Moon Rising is probably my favorite on the album. The slide guitar really hits the spot on this track, giving it a dark, paranoid vibe. Add in the almost Celtic sounding vocals and you've got yourself a soundtrack fit for picking up hitchhikers at midnight.

There are two kinds of people in this world--those who have their Christmas shopping done by Thanksgiving and those who are madly shopping and wrapping Christmas Eve. I try to have everything bought and wrapped by Halloween and leave the decorating for the day after Thanksgiving. When I was living in California I put the tulip bulbs in the refrigerator to cool on Thanksgiving and planted them New Year's Day. I am starting the Christmas knitting and crocheting today.

Eventually the house will be a small B&B furnished like the original house in period antiques and antique replica furniture produced on site by my son-in-law. We think the ghost is pleased with the renovations and restoration of the house. She has not spooked my son-in-law as she did the previous contractors and there is a sense of peace and contentment there now. The ghost hunters reassured me that there was nothing to fear in the house and I am looking forward to seeing what the guests find in the bedrooms upstairs.

A Warm Welcome

Good Morning my dears!

The Ladies of Poison Garden would like to introduce you all to our dear friend Nona who lives not too far away in a haunted Victorian home. She makes wonderful knits of all kinds. Many a day of leisure has included a friendly visit with Nona, under her dear knitting tree. I personally simply must have a pretty hair flower or other accessory upon every other visit! Look forward to more posts by Nona in the near future. The ladies of Poison Garden are looking forward to having Nona's knits accompany us on our festivals caravan this year!

Now on to more serious matters. Lately I have noticed such a level of outright indecency displayed by many a local youth. I find myself compelled to briefly touch on the importance of proper accessorizing. Firstly, the most basic and essential accompaniment to a lady's attire, gloves. Yes my darlings, a proper pair of gloves should be worn at all times save for when the hands are being used for eating and the like . I can hear your scoffing now, but never you mind those memories of unbecomingly sweaty palms. Summer weight laces are the fashionable ladies choice for this oppressive heat. Lighter colors being perfectly decent and yet a great degree cooler than more sober choices. Still, a light and delicate pair of lace gloves in black are at the pinnacle of fashionable appropriateness for the lady in mourning.

She offers quite a few Victorian and romantic pieces, such as the pocket watch necklace to the right. I love pocket watches - and you can see from this piece that Gilliauna has a great eye for color when she chose to combine the rose, milky white and brass colors in one piece. She also uses very unique findings such as the tri-circle you see above the pocket watch. She also uses brass findings shaped like roses, which you can see at the top left-hand side of the picture.

Recently it has been brought to my attention that the good folk who reside among the jimsonweed have been the cause of a great many instances of mischief and general hooliganism. Reports of fawny droppin, griddling, and elf shot peppering the hides of local cattle have come as quite a shock. After all, what ill treatment have our guests ever endured to lead them so astray? Each evening shillings and cants are laid for the wee ones and never is a word spoken against them. The only explanation for these disturbing events that we can gather is that the folk are seeking retribution for the blagging of their jimsonweed apples. If you have any clues that might lead us to the scoundrel who is responsible for these intrepid acts, for the sake of our peace, we implore you. End this ignominy and come forth while our goodly neighbors can still be appeased!

Last week we looked at an eclectic Bohemian shop and today we move a little to the dark side with our featured artist: KC Dragonfly. KC Dragonfly, a relatively new seller on Etsy, creates Gothic stockings, parasols, jewelry, glass bottles and other handmade accessories inspired by "dragonflies, the moon and water". Dragonflies are interesting creatures in native mythology. In Greek mythology, dragonflies in the nymph stage were thought to be minor underwater goddesses (Berger and Hansen 2004, 9). To the Japanese, dragonflies were the spirits of people who had passed on (Roberts 2010). KC Dragonfly's products therefore invoke a feeling of mystery, darkness, and grace.

So, I want to change our section previously titled "Etsy Finds" so that we include items from other stores, including mainstream, commercial stores. I think it is important to realize that we can decorate our homes or find alternative fashions in our local stores as well as buying from handmade artists. So, to kick off our new section I wanted to focus on a particular theme: clocks. I love clocks. My husband and I are building our own "clock wall" so I have been looking all over for new and interesting clocks. Searching the internet I found some great clock-inspired items not only on Etsy, but also at stores like Target and Pottery Barn.

This week we are featuring a very important shop: Mystic Wynd! Karen, the owner of this Arizona-based handmade store, is also the team leader for the BESTeam on Etsy, which is a group that supports handmade artists through blogging. When she is not coordinating the 40+ team members, Karen makes various pieces of jewelry such as earrings, bracelets, rosaries, and necklaces in a variety of materials including gemstones, crystals, shells, brass, and vintage cabochons. One of the unique aspects of this shop is that Karen's jewelry designs are so eclectic. On her site you can find gifts ranging from a pair of sophisticated chandelier earrings to the fun koi shell earrings, as well as a cute chrysanthemum ring and even a spiritual turquoise chakra necklace.

We were fortunate enough to speak with Karen and find out a little more about her and her jewelry:

How long have you been making jewelry?

"I probably made my first piece of jewelry when I was about 4, and while I've picked up beads now and then, I didn't pursue it as more than a hobby until about 4 years ago.

Who did you learn your craft from? Was there a reason you chose that particular craft?
"I'm self taught, because that's how I usually learn things! I've attended some workshops along the way and continue to explore different techniques, but experimenting is my favorite way to come up with some unique results. As for why jewelry design? I think jewelry is probably the one thing that can change not only a person's look, but the way they feel about themselves, in the quickest and easiest way. I also love the fact that you can turn just about anything into jewelry!"

"For me, it's just life in general. I draw on memories, stories I read, movies I see, nature... even the weather!"

When you're not being artistically creative, what do you like to do to pass the time?

Ardent Reverie is run by two sisters, Melanie and Meghan Mina, out of San Diego, California. After seeing this hat to the right (which is absolutely adorable by the way), I began to wonder: how could a person who has alternative interests dress their baby in such a way that would be both cute and show of their own style? I think the hats at BabaMoon offer one such option!

BabaMoon is an Etsy store run by a mother named Naomi Morgan who lives in Birmingham, UK with her two children. Naomi not only makes the Alice in Wonderland hat, but also elf hats, pixie hats, witch hats, and aviator flap hats that may suit some of the readers on this blog. Recently, Poison Garden joined the BEST Team on Etsy. We are excited to introduce a fellow member of this team: Studio Ahimsa. Studio Ahimsa is a Candian-based stationary and print store operated by Tazim and Greg. Both shop owners studied Art History in school, with Greg focusing on graphic design and Tazim on interior design. Today, the couple offers a variety of products online including letter sets, limited edition prints, greeting cards and gift tags.

One look at the store shows you that the couple creates products with a particular theme in mind: nature. The papers are decorated with waterfalls, forests, birds, lilies and other flowers. The couple says they are particularly inspired by their local Canadian landscape and wildlife. The couple's love for nature extends beyond capturing it in art, though. One of the best aspects of this store is that when you purchase one of their products, you are supporting a business that uses 100% recycled paper and non-toxic inks.

However, the store also contains products that have surprising and fun designs such as robots, coffee, and other kitchen-inspired designs. This little robot is my favorite item in the store!

To create most of their art like this robot, Greg and Tazim use a printmaking technique called linocut. The artist cuts a design into a piece of linoleum and the raised sections are then inked and pressed into paper. In some ways, it is a process similar to a woodcut.

Steampunk Necklace by Poison Garden

Anyone here follow Regretsy? If you haven't heard of this site yet, Regretsy is a blog that follows real handmade items which they find to be disastrous, incredulous, etc. and in particular, items from Etsy (thus the name). I recently ran across a Regretsy article called "Not Remotely Steampunk". While the pictures of these so called "steampunk" items are entertaining, the article pinpoints the fact that "steampunk" is popular this season even if people do not understand what "steampunk" really is.

So then, what is Steampunk? A scan across the internet will provide many different definitions of Steampunk:
1. "...it refers to a genre of fiction where steam power, spring gadgets and modern marvels of the 20th century are thrown back to Victorian aesthetics. Technology in a Neo-Victorian setting." Steampunk Lab.

2. "An aesthetic movement based around the science fiction of a future that never happened." Clockwork Century.

To us, Steampunk means jewelry/fashion/visuals that resemble Victorian-era styles with technological additions. It is the blend of romantic Victorian styles with the hard metals and gears of industrial machines. It is called "Steam" because in the late Victorian era, we see the development of the first steam-powered inventions such as the train and hot air balloons/dirigibles. Steampunk goes beyond these real-life machines and adds a touch of the fantastical! To put it succinctly, "Think Jules Verne, " says Melissa of Poison Garden.

Find Poison Garden Items in Store: The Craft House

Hello everyone! We are excited to announce that Poison Garden items will be in downtown Lafayette at a new store called The Craft House, which opens the first week of November 2010. The Craft House features only handmade goods from local artists and already has a store open in Crawfordsville, Indiana. They also plan to open a store in Brownsburg. Our items will be located in the back right corner on the jewelry wall.

We got to meet a few of the new vendors including a woman who makes Monster wallets (no, not oversized wallets-fuzzy wallets with monster faces!) and a woman who makes high-end jewelry. To find out more about the Craft House, visit their Etsy store.

Tea Time: New Poison Garden Items

Some of you may have noticed that Poison Garden has a new type of item: beaded tea infusers. The tea infusers are heart-shaped with a few beads on the hanger. For those who have never used a tea infuser, these contraptions allow you to brew tea with loose tea leaves, if you like. You can also mix together different tea leaves to create your own flavors. These would make great holiday gifts, especially for those who love Victorian items.
